An exhibition in remembrance of Milco Onrust

CD – Sure Enough Mr. WHO und andere Texte, 1992

1991 Milco invited me to conceive an exhibition for his gallery in Amsterdam for the spring of 1992.

After meetings at my studio and conversations about the particular choreography of space and imagination, we decided to present only 3 pieces in the exhibition. The exhibition consisted of one multi-piece sculpture entitled „Horos“ and two large scale drawings entitled „Sophia“ and Adoni“, which defined the space of the gallery. The postcard announcement of the exhibition listed the three works as precise captions with title, date, material and measurements.

The exhibition opened on March 28, 1992, at a time when I already prepared an exhibition for Kunsthalle Göppingen, which was to open in early September of the same year. Kunsthalle Göppingen had decided to publish a catalogue on the occasion of my exhibition with Cantz Publishers.
Milco who always thought in polyvalent directions connecting art, music and literature, had a particular interest and admiration for my predilection and engagement in writing. 1987 we had published our first booklet together, entitled „IWORU“, which included a text and a poem I had especially written for the occasion. 1991 he co published a small book with Art Book Amsterdam on a color theory I had just finished, „De Coloribus – Notes on Color“, which was accompanied by a set of poems on color.

While I was occupied with the preparation of the catalogue for Cantz Publishers, Milco came up with a fantastic idea and challenge to simultaneously record a series of my texts on Compact Disc spoken by myself. He offered Cantz a cooperation to distribute the CD not only during our exhibition in Amsterdam but also during the exhibition at Kunsthalle Göppinbgen later that year. Cantz most willingly agreed and Milco and I traveled to Haarlem, where he had organized the recording of my texts at „Bananas Studios“. In Haarlem we worked with Frank Akkermann who introduced me to recording and digital mastering, which was in the professional hands of Hay Zeelen. We had the most wonderful and exciting time even though the recording proved to be a challenging concentration. Milco, however, with his unique and persuading enthusiasm and conviction kept pushing me to read and re-read until we finished the recording in one day, celebrating the task with a great dinner in high spirits!

Thus our exhibition finally presented 4 pieces with the newly recorded CD included.
